“Eric, come on, do we have to talk about this stuff?” Ang never liked the topic of death.
“How did she die, Dad?” Bryce asked.
Everest interrupted, “Mom, it’s not bad, it’s good. They used the power of love. I think it’s kind of cool. They used the power of love to die.”
“So she died by love?” Bryce asked again.
“Kind of B Bear. She just loved him so much she didn’t want to be without him. So when he died, she went with him.”
“Mom, do you want to do that when dad dies?”
“Wait a minute, how do you guys know I’m going first?” I asked.
Ang answered wryly, “I don’t mind going first, and I kind of want a few years of peace in heaven.”
“I agree with mom. She needs to rest in peace.”
I agreed. “You know, you’re right, I wouldn’t mind a few years to myself. I’m due.”
Ang slapped me on the arm and belted out my name in exclamation.
I rethought my answer. “Actually, I think maybe I should die first. You always did say you’d come back to haunt me.”
“Oh, yes dear, I will. Trust me.”
“I’m not sure I can handle that. You’ll be backseat driving everything I do, except then you’ll have access to my every move. I can see it now. ‘Turn left’, ‘Are you really going to eat that? You had enough sweets today.’ ‘You better not say that out loud!’, ‘You can do better than that old bag. She’s just after your money!’”
“Are you done?”
“Look, I will haunt you, but only because I love you,” Ang smiles. “You’re clueless without me.”
“I’m clueless with you too, but perhaps you’re right.”
The dryer’s beeped almost in unison. The clothes were extracted from their tumbling adventures, folded modestly and assigned for portage back to the RV with their respective owners. The blasts of hot wind continued to wail as we loaded the clothes into their drawers. They shook the motor home like they meant it. The wind moaned against the buildings, causing trees to whip themselves without control, and pushed us in unwelcome fiery gusts until we were well out of town.
“I think that was the weirdest town I’ve ever been in,” Everest said.
Ang turned around as if taking inventory that everyone was safe. “Well, I’ll tell you all one thing. I’m definitely bringing more clothes if we ever do this again.”
